Sleeping Princes

Sleeping Princes
The story of a prince and his retinue who sleep in a cavern awaiting the clarion call to serve their country is a common feature of European myth. The prevalance of these stories is doubtless linked with the early custom whereby on the death of a ruler the principal members of his court were killed and buried with him in order that he should have his retinue in the other world.
Instances of this are given under Alfatin, Barbarossa, Ercildoune, Marco, Mullaghmart, The Seven Sleepers, Stoymir, and Wenceslas.
